Growing up in Africa, the only way we thought to get ahead in life was by doing well in school. I never thought or knew there was any other way. I had worked hard and had finally become the Medical Doctor I’d always wanted to be since at the age of 6.I never saw myself doing anything else. I honestly thought life was going to be easy and fulfilling, after all, I had done the hard work. It was time for me to enjoy the fruits of my labour. Years passed by and I kept saying to myself, if I work harder and get to the top of my career I will have all the things that I wanted. This could not be further from the truth. I kept working, hoping, wishing and praying that it’d get easier but it never was.
Where was the dream home, the travel, the money and flexibilty? Something had to give. 10 years ago, I was at a point of breakdown. I was working from 8am to 8pm and still bringing work home. I was also working weekends and at the end of the month I couldn’t say I was comfortable. There was always more month than cash.
I had to do something to break the cycle.
I needed time to spend with my beautiful family, I needed the finances to be able to support my family and extended family. I wanted the flexibilty to travel and of course to have the recognition for what I was doing.
My search led me to network marketing. I saw an opportunity to start a low cost business, one that I could start part-time and earn full time.
And I immediately knew this was my way out.
Fast Forward a few years of running my business part time alongside my medical practice, all I can say is, I have achieved all the goals I set out for myself and I am a lot happier
The lifestyle, you name it.
And it’s all happened because I had the guts to take a leap of faith and tried something different
If the Pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that there is no such thing as a job for life. While our parents and grandparents might have enjoyed the luxury of having one main job from leaving school till they retired, our generation is facing a very different reality. Hence the ever growing trend of the ‘side hustling’.
According to the Cambridge Dictionary a side hustle or side gig is a piece of work that you get paid for doing in addition to your main job. But I like to say a side hustle is that thing you do to facilitate living a life of your dreams. Because let’s face it, there are only but a handful of paying jobs that will give you the lifestyle you love, this, coming from a Medical Doctor mind you.
I absolutely love what I do, don’t get me wrong but on it’s own, I couldn’t really enjoy the lifestyle I craved – which was spending more time with my family. So happy to say that with my side hustle, I do just that.
So my question to you is, are you happy with the way things are going for you right now? If not, then you should definitely consider a side hustle and here are some reasons why.
Think of that vacation you’ve been dreaming of taking your whole life or the debt that just keeps piling up, affording your own home, saving for a rainy day etc. These are things that most of us desire to have but just can’t with our earning potential. And that my dear friend is why I chose to join the side hustle bandwagon. Because all the above stresses and desires are being met on a daily basis because of my side hustle
While most people start out working on side hustles for financial purposes, many of us quickly come to realise that there is so much more to side hustles. Side hustles empower you to learn new skills, build your confidence, boost your self worth and esteem. It’s also about empowering yourself to find you have economic value outside of your day job and pay cheque.
Many people report starting side hustles to pay off debt but once this is paid off, the extra income can quickly lead to wealth building. Side hustles have propelled many millennials quicker to millionaire status. Something that is quite impossible to achieve from a day job.
There’s nothing better than doing what you love! Most people find so much fulfilment from their side hustle that they quit their full time day job to become full time self employed. This comes with many perks including :
The flexibility to work where and when you want.
You get to be your boss
You set your own personal target and have the freedom to choose how little or how much effort you want to invest depending on other factors in your life.
Several years ago, when I started working on my side hustle, I had not the foggiest idea of the possibilities of what it could afford me. All I know today is, I’m glad I took the leap of faith and started. Because not only am I living the life of my dreams, I’m helping others to do that too.
